Homeless shelters across Canada receive little funding for products for people in their shelters. Food, accommodation and clothes take priority and with the stigma behind periods, feminine hygiene products often fall to the bottom of the list. For the fourth straight year, Ottawa has seen a rise in the number of people using emergency shelters, many of these people being women. The cost of menstrual hygiene management can be prohibitive for homeless or precariously housed women and adolescent girls. This is something we at TCC Canada feel strongly towards, and so we’re taking part in a feminine-hygiene drive through a national group called BCCB Women (Bangladeshi Canadian-Canadian Bangladeshi) and their Citizenship subdivision which is dedicated to bettering the lives of Canadians. The BCF is a non-profit organization with over 20,000 members.
It is estimated a woman will use 11,000 sanitary pads in her lifetime which can add up to nearly $6,000. Our collaborative goal is to distribute as many feminine hygiene kits to women’s shelters across Canada including Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Edmonton from now until August 31, 2018. In Ottawa, we’re aiming to make over 100 Sanitary Care Kits for Harmony House, a women’s shelter in Ottawa. With your donations, we are sure we will surpass this target.
Becoming a sponsor either through financial donation or product donation of this wonderful initiative is a social obligation towards us bettering the vulnerable people in our beautiful country. These hygienic products are an important part of every menstruating woman and adolescent girl’s life, not only for cleanliness but in building self-confidence and boosting self-esteem, and sometimes avoiding trouble with the law (often associated with petty theft).
