Dr. Cynthia Cruickshank is an Associate Professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department and is Carleton University’s ambassador for Engineers Canada’s 30 by 30 initiative. As Director of Carleton’s Solar Energy Systems Laboratory and Centre for Advanced Building Envelope Research, her research focuses on the design and optimization of advanced building energy systems, including solar-assisted heat pumps, absorption chillers, thermal storage, and high-performance building envelopes.
Dr. Cruickshank was the Carleton University Faculty Advisor for Team Ontario, a participant in the 2013 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. Team Ontario, a collaboration between students and faculty from Carleton University, Queen’s University, and Algonquin College, won first place in the coveted Engineering category at the 2013 Solar Decathlon Competition in Irvine, California. Dr. Cruickshank has also been the recipient of a number of research awards, including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Discovery and Collaborative Research and Development Grants, Canada Foundation for Innovation Leaders Opportunity Fund, the Natural Resources Canada Energy Innovation Program, Ontario Research Fund and Ontario Centres of Excellence Collaborative Research Grant. Dr. Cruickshank has also been recognized for her teaching, earning the Carleton Student Engineering Society award for Best Professor in 2019, the Carleton Teaching Achievement Award in 2016, and an award from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation for excellence in sustainable education in 2014.
Dr. Cruickshank has authored or co-authored over 70 peer-reviewed papers on the topic of solar energy, thermal storage, and high-performance building envelopes.
